I’m looking forward to Karen Maitland’s forthcoming mystery/novel, The Owl Killers, because it’s set in a medieval Beguinage, which was a convent or uncloistered spiritual commune for lay women who sought to serve God without taking permanent vows or necessarily renouncing the possibility of marriage. I’m fascinated by the Beguines and their eventual persecution under the Inquisition, and I hope the novel doesn’t disappoint!
